*.php3 & <a name.... <a href="#....

I was wondering if anyone could show me how to accomplish this in a php file:

<a href="#thename">Go to thename</a>

I'm not sure I understand the question. You can do it in php just like in html. If you want to use a variable for "thename" then do something like this:

<?php
echo "<a name=\"$thename\">";

... and later...

echo "<a href=\"#$thename\">Go to $thename</a>";

PS is # turns out to be "special", replace it with #.

That is the link. Please ignore all the errors and stuff: I haven't had time to upload those things. Anyway, if you could take a look at this place in the first paragraph,

"are two categories: Web Publishing Tutorials<\/a> and Sites With Downloads."

I want people to click on Web Publishing Tutorials and Sites With Downloads. When they click on it, the page should scroll down a bit like it would in HTML. However, it doesn't work. 🙁 Thanks in advance! I really appreciate your help. 🙂

Hmm, this seems to be an odd server behaviour. Normally, a name reference will forward to the same page plus the name. For example clicking the href link (just hover over it to see where it will send you) will usually produce something like:

http://www.wshc.f2s.com/webtutlinks.php3#b

Whereas your current page produces:

http://www.wshc.f2s.com/#b

I don't know if this is a PHP problem or a HTTP server problem. I'll try some experiments and get back to you.

The following code worked fine on my IIS/PHP4 setup. Check to see if it works on yours:

It does work! But that's how I did it in webtutlinks.php3. I don't understand why that happened but it's working now! Thanks! BTW, could you tell me why it doesn't work off-line? You know, it takes quite a bit of time to dial up and upload etc. and I'd rather test it on my computer off-line. Thanks again!

There are a great many tutorials on how to set up PHP, Apache, and MySQL on your home machine to do development.

Agreed, setup your local workstation to run a web server and do development on your local machine. PHP works with all of the most popular web servers (meaning Netscape, Apache, IIS, etc.) I use Micro$oft's Personal web server and win98 for development for the most part. I do some development remotely via ssh to a linux/apache/mySQL box.
