SQL Sorting

I have an SQL table that has a colum named ref that has values

dav-1
dav-2
dav-3

All the way up to 12. It's not always a fixed number of entries for different names, so I look up the entries like this--

SELECT * FROM reviews_db WHERE ref like "$item-%" ORDER BY ref ASC;

but then i wind up with the results in the wrong order, as such:

dav-1
dav-10
dav-11
dav-12
dav-2
dav-3

etc. Any ideas how i can get this in the right order?

Maybe a bit inefficient but since it is such a small scale, I just read how many rows were returned with the wildcard then read the read of the variables out in a loop...the result was a bunch of seperate queries, but since its only 10 of them hardly any lost time.
