Formatting text

Does any know how I can create a textarea with functionality to all my users to apply formatting to that text, ie. to mark parts of the text with Bold, Underline, Italics, etc ?!! is that possible. I am them wanting to store the contents of my textarea to SQL Server7.0. Is this possible.
Any help gratefully received.

i do not really understand exactly what you are pointing out.
But if you want the text to be typed in form and then you are storing it in db, which will then be displayed on webpage, then i suggest you simply type the HTML codes for bold, italic etc... while typing the text in TEXTAREA.

thanks for your response. Unfortunately a TextArea doesn't seem to be able to interpret HTML codes like , , or , is there a way of getting that to work do you know ?

When displaying your data, use the PRE tag. It will display your saved textarea as HTML.

My problem is that when a page is reading from the database, to make it display the text exactly as I wrote it in the text area. The main problem is "Return". I'm experimenting with a script that formats the text and replaces Return-key-strokes with " ", but I cant make it work (I'm a bad coder). Now, for fun, I'm gonna try the return key in this text area.

I output large text fields with formating to a html page.
This works for me:

echo $texttodisplay ;

Solved my problem in seconds.

The data coming out of the mysql database was not formating properly. It was leaving out the new lines.

The nl2br function worked for me.
