beginning webmail

I\'ve been programming in PHP for a few months now, but have recently been given the task of writing a webmail for our mail server.

Reading through the PHP manual, I can understand the basics, connecting to the mail server, sending mail, ect. But there are a few things that leave me with dumbfounded look on my face. (Either I\'m not reading it right, or it\'s not explained well.)

Here\'s where I run into problems:

Headers. I can\'t seem to have any script i try retrieve the message headers in a mailbox. I also don\'t see which commands are best suited for
which situation.

sorting. I have no clue how i would sort the messages in a mailbox and display them to be read.

If anyone can point me down the right road, or tell me if there\'s a decent tutorial out there, I\'d greatly appreciate it.

Read "Programming Internet Email" by David Wood, O' reilly Publications. That book should answer most of your questions (It is not PHP specific, however there is a complete (UNIX) "mail" replacement in perl which you can use for guidance)

You should check out the php packages available here:

I recommend IMP, a PHP based webmail product. It is listed on the afore-mentioned page, and it's url is:

That may be easier than trying to re-invent the wheel. Good Luck!

Hi! Look, I'm dealing with the same project, only that I'm doing it for hobby 🙂

The first thing I recommend you is to read the POP3 RFC (I don't remember which number was, take a look at www.faqs.org).

Also, I'm developing a POP3 PHP Class, and at this time, I could read the headers off a mail. If you want to take a look at my code, send me an email to [e-mail]
