mysql, passwords

i have a directory of sorts made with php4 and mysql
as the directory is now anyone can edit anyone elses data
i am looking for a way to give each user a password (stored as a column in the sql table) so that user X can only edit his/her own information
now before you flood me with all sorts of technical terms, keep in mind that i just read my first php manual yesterday, so i'm quite the newbie

You would have to set up a staff table in MySQL. You would have a username and password elements. Then you could check to see if your name matches the author of what you're editing. Hope this helps.

it already has a unique id # for each row, could i use this as the username?

i still need some more exstensive help (possibly some sample code?) though, like i said, i'm just a newbie

When you click edit, you are sent to a page. This page asks you to edit the user, then hit Submit. Tell the user to type in the person's password you are typing. Then, when you hit submit, you can compare the two.

that's exactly how i pictured it working
i'm just trying to figure out how to do this

here's how i'm thinking it would work

when person X clicks his name the edit page shows up
this page contains the form which has all data filled in except the password

i'm pretty sure i can get this to work using http validation
