Upload images using PHP/HTML without the path???

I am trying to create a PHP/HTML/mySQL front-end for an e-commerce package. When I try to have the use select an image and upload it, it's not saving the image name to the variable, it's saving the image and path to the variable and it's not uploading to the directory. Does anyone know why this is happening? I did everything that William Samplonius did in his tutorial, but it didn't work..any help? please??

your file input field name + _name should contain the original file name. eg if you have the input field
<input type=file name=file>
then the variable $file will contain the system path and filename of the uploaded file on your server so you should copy this file to where you want it. $file_name should contain the original filename.
