populate drop down

I have tried so many different ways to get this done and I cannot for the life of me make it work. I think perhaps the problem lies in that I do not want the drop down to be populated with all the data from columnX I want to do a search on variable1 and then populate the drop down with all the values that return for columnX after the search. Any help would be appriciated.

Try something like...
