Does anyone know if that you can use GD to make lets say a square on a image and make it a hotspot at the same time. ??

You are talking about mixing image and HTML content. The GD library only creates image content.
The nice solution is to write a class which makes it easy to combine the functionality.
i am in dare need to generate hotspots on images that are created through gd lib.
