Matching newline "\n" in a string

I want to replace any new lines input into a textarea with a <br> tag in order to output results in the same manner as they were entered. I've tried the obvious ereg_replace("\n", "<br>", $string) but with no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
