displaying ' in mysql

It's been bugging me for a little while....what kinda field must I use so I can have a single quote displayed in a database?

I know what your thinking.....I've been able to INSERT them also.....but I can't UPDATE with them.....I know why they return errors....but I don't know how to get around it.

Could it be the code of the script that does the inserting?....like:

mysql_query(INSERT into $dbtable (field1,field2) VALUES ('$field1','$field2'));
//if field1 has a ' obviously it will stuff things up.

Should it be...
mysql_query(INSERT into $dbtable (field1,field2) VALUES ($field1,$field2));.....?

I've tried VARCHAR....BLOB....TEXT.....sometime's it works and sometimes it doesn't......whats the catch?

You want the input in the database to be single quoted? Have you tried \' ?

Replace all ' with ''

$field1 = str_replace("'","''",$field1);

Can you remember which field type you used when you got it working without the replace mentioned above?

try AddSlashes() detail u can find in php manual

You can configure PHP to automatically add the slashes, to create a piece of code that works either way, do this:

// If magic_quotes_gpc is not enabled, add those slashes.
if (!get_cfg_var( "magic_quotes_gpc")) {
$arg = addslashes($arg);
}
?>
