Credit Card Processing

How would one go about credit card processing in PHP?

Let us assume that we have a very (unrealisticly) simple setup; a one-item store.

Let us also assume that the company we're designing this site for has a merchant account, and can therefor process credit cards.

A user fills in his shipping information, enters his credit card info, and clicks "Submit."

Then what? My mind's really run into a brick wall.

I know that the web sites with a Credit Card System, first check if the number is valid. If you are interested in know when a Credit Card Number is valid or when not, tell me and I write a little explanation for you, also for everyone that want it 🙂

Hmm, yes. I've seen several scripts like that in various archives, and I suppose I'll just use one of them.

However, what I'm wondering is if there's a way to automatically transfer the funds from the customer's credit card to the business's merchant account, be it via a 3rd-party service or some other method.

Essentially, what I want to avoid is making it so my client has to manually transfer the funds from every order they receive. I've no experience in dealing with merchant accounts, but I assume it's not an exceedingly easy process, especially with several hundred pending orders.

You have to have a merchant processor that handles real time CC transactions, and a gateway (frequently provided). Let me know if you want suggestions on who. This is done all the time when the products are downloadable.

Hmm, I'd certainly like suggestions on who.

Also, does it require expensive server software? The service fees can be handled by the client, but I'd rather not empty the coffers while setting the thing up for the first time.

Fortunately there is no expensive server software necessary. Depending on the processor and such there will be some transaction fees, but this will be part of the merchant account charges for your client. It will only involve some coding time on your part, no up front cash. I personally use Authorize.net for my transactions. They have reasonable fees and pretty readily integratable solutions. http://www.authorize.net. They also can work with many existing mechant providers so your client might just be able to use them as a gateway. If you do end up setting up something with them please mention my company AudibleFaith.com (I can get a referral fee). There are other gateways such as cybercash, but I don't have any personal experience with em.

Ok, let's go:

Credit Card --> CC

A CC has 16 numbers, from #0 to #15.

1.- Pick up #0, #2, #4, #6, #8, #10, #12, #14 an multiply it for two. If a result is bigger than 9, sum their ciphers.

2.- Sum the results and the rest of the original numbers.

3.- If the result is divided by ten, the CC is valid.

EXAMPLE 1:

CC: 4296 0105 8243 6752

42= 8
92=18 -> 1+8= 9
02= 0
02= 0
82=16 -> 1+6= 7
42= 8
62=12 -> 1+2= 3

52=10 -> 1+0= 1

(8+9+0+0+7+8+3+1) + (2+6+1+5+2+3+7+2) = 64
NOT VALID !!!!

EXAMLE 2:

CC: 4296 0105 8243 6758

42= 8
92=18 -> 1+8= 9
02= 0
02= 0
82=16 -> 1+6= 7
42= 8

52=10 -> 1+0= 1

Do you if this is SET Approved, do you need Set Approved Software or is this included in the fee by Authorize.net

I'm not sure I understand the question. You can get processing software to run batches from a PC, but I use a web based interface. You need to code a transaction routine. I run one in ASP right now, and am currently writing a PHP interface. Please clarify.

yes but what about switch cards which have at least 18 digits?!

I am almost certain that you would be happier letting some third party company do all the processing for you and charge you 1 or 2 % taken directly out of the funds they send you by check or direct of the monies paid. Not only do you not have to worry about security as most 3rd party billing companys have their own very secure system to handle the cards, and also they do all the work for you. What more could you ask for?

This is very true given that it is about 4% anyway.

If you have any suggestions please tell me. We are still in the very early stages of the project so any tips would greatefully received.

I understand the issue and I am sorry if I was somewhat confused, it was my mis-understanding your problem. Dumping it and then rebuild with 50k+ records is out of the question but maybe you cut off all the records after where you want to add and paste them into a temp database, doing the add of a record then paste them back. A lot of work but could be done overnight with an automated process. It would leave the database the way you want it but I don't know how easily you could implement it.

TrustCommerce has a PHP module for processing credit cards. You need a live merchant account which is linked to your business's checking account in order to actually get the money; TC can help you get hooked up with one of those. The module itself is free (LGPL).
