how do I listen to a specific port under *nix (redhat 6.1)?

Ideally I'd like to do something like:
tail -f port nnn (I just made that up obviously)

I've had a good search on redhat.com but all I'm coming up with is firewall
stuff

from where you can get informations about php debugger, which can debug php program using some methods, such as Step, Goto, Run,
and can view/set/modify variable's value,
and can watch variables in watch window
