Hello Antony,

There is no direct way to send SMS directly from PHP, but many mobile phone network providors provide an email address (for example, 8917738@gsm.is goes to my phone).

If you want to send SMS to phones that are not all located in the same country, or your phone company charges you for this service, your best bet is to try some German providors. At least one German providor lets you send SMS to any phone in the world free (I think...), I don't remember the company's name, it was something like D2, Mannerheim...something...

Hi,

Yes PHP can send SMS.

You need to know the SMS server port address,
and IP.

Then you will need to open a socket connection and write your SMS message directly to the port.

There are a few PERL scripts around that can send SMS through the mtnsms.com
server. (mtnsms is the biggest free sms service) But because those free sms providers are afraid of bulk-sms sending through scripts, they all try to make
it difficult for you: they use cookies, usernames, message numbers etc. So it's not as easy as just posting a form... But just enter 'mtnsms perl' in google.com
and you'll find the perlscript, which shows you how it works. And you can start perl from php... (or convert the script)

what about making a PHP script that outputs number and text to a script that runs on SMS gateway server ? Isn't that possible ?

you can totally send SMS messages through PHP. theres this company called Simplewire that specializes in wireless text messaging and theyve got a bunch of software development kits that make sending SMS messages easy. they just so happen to have a PHP module for linux/unix for sending wireless messages regardless of carrier. and their activex object can be used for PHP under windows. check it out at www.simplewire.com.

I have checked out Simplewire - its not open source or cheap. I'm looking for a free open source solution. It looks like the jm_sms project at http://freshmeat.net/projects/jm_sms/ will do it. I'll let you know.

Do some more research Mike, you'll find there are some "FREE" services out there to connect up to. One cool sms site not done in PHP is http://www.ipsh.net/

Probably the best one I've seen yet.

The simplest way to send SMS from PHP is to use a HTTP API.

Also have a look at www.asp2sms.com, despite the name they have php examples as well.

You can also send email to a cell phone, though the user generally (at least here in canada) needs to pay for the service...
