How to create a new Linux user account?

Hi, does anybodt know how to create a new linux user account by php, so that only that user can go to his directory? I tried system() or exec() but they didn't work. Did i miss anything or were there any other ways to do that (to have only the user go to his own account, like geocities or hotmail)? Thanks!

I am not sure, but I would think you would need to make your php script start a c or perl script(running as root??) that can run the commands to create the user and set them up with default starting directories ie. home directories.
but if your needs are internet based, and you do not need them to have a actual linux account you may be able to use the file commands to create a directory in you web folders and then make your log in page redirect them to the proper location when they login correctly.... for security purposes it may be best to encrypt a temperary cookie on the system that will be checked by all pages within that new directory structure. The amount of time you spend on security may be based on your usage.
