how to know mail size ?

Hi....
I am writing a program to send email using php. So far I can manage to send mail. But I need to keep the size of email I send and keep that in the database. Can someone tell me how I do that.
Also, if possible, is there a way to find out if the email can not be delivered say the email address no longer exists
