Erm - can anyone help... I have an utterly trivial problem (I think) - I just have a mental block and can't DO it!

I have an array value called:

$displaytext["desc"]

it contains ordinary text, of the form:

"the cat is on the mat 1.jpg and the dog is in the house 2.jpg and the monkey is in the tree *3.gif and so on"
The number is always 1 digit (1 to 9). The suffix might be .jpg or .gif.

I need to pull out the "x.jpg" and send it to another function (that I have written already) then incorporate the result back into the string (which I then print).

i.e.

$result = " The cat is on the mat" . anotherfunction("1.jpg") . " and the dog is in the house" . anotherfunction("2.jpg") . " and the monkey is in the tree" . anotherfunction("3.jpg");
print $result;

I would be eternally grateful if someone could show me the light.....

try:

ereg_replace( \\'\\*([1-9])\\.[a-zA-Z]+\\', \\'blah( \\\\1 );\\', $string )

I would recommend tokenizing the string.

$string = "the cat is on the mat 1.jpg and the dog is in the house 2.jpg and the monkey is in the tree *3.gif and so on"

$result = strtok($string, "");
while ($string = strtok("")) {
$result .= anotherfunction($string) . strtok("*");
}

Note, however, that you'll have bugs if you do not have a funciton parameter as your last value because you'll pass anotherfunction() the wrong paramerter with this code.

$desc);

/ $res2 = "\$result = \"" \"print\" . "$res1" . "\";"; /
eval("$res2");
print $result;
