Replacing damagin HTML tags

When you have people posting information to a website (just like this phorum) there is the chance that someone wants to be a punk and put HTML tags that can mess up you page. Is there some PHP function that can convert the carrots to the representation of them so a browser doesnt think its a tag?

Or do I just have to do ereg_replace?

And if so anyone know extactly how I would do that?

simply use htmlspecialchars($string);

and that will convert all HTML characters.
