Creating Thumbnail Pics

I am familiar with the ImageCreatefromJPEG stuff and the need for gd1.8 but before I go down that path, it is my understanding that this will not work for photos in JPG format. gd does not support true color and I would guess that a photo quality jpg is going to be true color. Can someone verify this for me. Also, my goal is to generate thumbs of uploaded pictures. If there is a better way, I'd appreciate any advice. It is a UNIX server. Thanks

"Though PHP3 uses the GD library for most of its image functionality, it has not been updated to support the PNG (Portable Network Graphics) format. It only has support for the earlier GIF format. Since version 1.6, GD discontinued support for GIF due to copyright issues; we must either use the older versions of library or wait until PHP supports the PNG format. Unfornately, even up to the Beta 3 release of PHP 4, PNG support is still missing."

As you know PHP 4 is out right now, you should go to www.php.net to find your answer there.

You should consider using PNG format instead.
PNG is 256 color whereas JPEG is only 24 bit and is really slow if you only have an 8 bit display.

i will soon need to do a similar thing. i found last a program called imagemagick (for pc, maybe unix also exists) that resizes by chosen % and lots of other transforms, on a command line. worst case you could call out to this?

Hmmm,

my best bet would be get the image size, then do some calculations, and resize that image (just through <img src...>) by 50% or whatever you want.

if you mean client side resizing in the html,
then that will slow the download size to the
size of the full file. if not then i apologise!

apparently the 'gd' library for php includes
ImageCopyResized (got this from the standard
php manual, http://www.php.net/distributions/bigmanual.html#FUNCTION.IMAGECOPYRESIZED
) so you could just resize the whole of one image
to another image. don't know what the gd
library is yet, but i will soon!

I am using Apache and BSDi. I have downloaded ImageMagick but filed to compile (in fact failed in configure). And I didn't find any mention on PHP in the ImageMagick website. (a lot for Perl, C++, Java...)

Where should I get more info on this?
