How to trap a 404

Hey all-

Can someone tell me how to trap a 404 when someone types in a bogus filename in the URL?

Ex. Someone types in http://freshmeat.net/adfjfjfjfjfj.php and they recieve a pretty 404 error page.

If I do the same to my own site, I get the PHP error:

Fatal error: Unable to open C:\path\to\website\adfjfjfj.php in Unknown on line 0

I use IIS5 / Win2K.

I don't know what method you are using to create your custom error message, but try checking out this page.

So far I have no custom error message. This is why I am asking!

I can create one just fine. My problem is that even with a custom error, PHP is still trying to parse the nonexistant file producing the error I mentioned before.

Jumpline hosts 2 of my sites, and they do a pretty good job, but if you have any pull with them, Sarah, ask them to upgrade:

MySQL 3.21.33
PHP Version 3.0.12

Just an example, Phorum needs MySQL 3.22+ and of course.

I know that they are working on upgrading the servers, but I don't have anything to do with it.

Ok. Here's what's up.

Go to http://www.socket7.net and you get a page (though not very exiting).

Now, go to http://www.socket7.net/jfjfjfjfjfjfjf.php (an invalid page name) and you get one of two errors:

Fatal error: Unable to open \path\to\file\jfjfjfjfj.php in - on line 0
No input file specified.
(you're going to see the path anyway)
CGI Error
The specified CGI application misbehaved by not returning a complete set of HTTP headers. The headers it did return are:
(and then the headers are blank)

I run this site off of my own connection to the internet ( I Host it ) and I want to trap those error messages into a 404.

How do I do it?

I don't understand what CGI has to do with anything. The only way that I know how to make a custom error page is to use an .htaccess file, specifying the new page. I haven't had much experience with CGI, so I don't think that I can help you.

The problem lies NOT in the fact that I am running a CGI, etc.

The problem is that right now if I type in a bogus filename, I get that CGI or PHP error, RATHER THAN recieving a 404-Error.

I want to be able to redirect a request for a bogus (non-existant) page to a 404 page.

Hopefully that is more simplistic.
