Chop function ?

Hum ..
i need more info about the Chop function

i build a forum,
and i want to reduce the text space in database. So i thing the chop function will work but:
$txttext="Hello friend, i happy to see you "
$txttext=chop($txtext);

$txttext return null string ?!?

mh, perhaps it's just a typo on your end:

$txttext = chop($txtext);

$txttext = chop($txttext);
