chopping off a piece of a string

Hello, stupid question.

I know there's a way to do it, just can't find it ... (and yes, I searched ... but was probably using the wrong search words or something!)

I have a string, call it $body, that contains the body of an article. I want to chop off only a couple paragraphs of it to display on the main page ...

What's the function and syntax again?

Ok, you're forgiven... I thought that the function would be 'chop', but if you call "substr" with a negative length, it will return the string with |-len| character's chopped off the end.
