Hi - I'm quite new to php myself and I've used "Core PHP Programming" by Leon Atkinson as my guide. It's probably not really targeted for beginners, but it contains a general outline of the structure of a programing language as well as descibing the specifics of php. I've combined the info found there with advice and code found here at phpbuilder.com and achieved most of my goals. Hope that helps!
