Why does this code only display one image?

<?php
$num = "4663";
for($i=0; $i < strlen($num); $i++) {
$varname = substr($num,$i,1);
readfile("/usr/home/gifsdir/$varname.gif");
}
?>

When I have it do this:

print "$varname <br>";
instead of
readfile("/usr/home/gifsdir/$varname.gif");

it prints all the variables, so why do I only get one image?

Your code works fine, but your browser can only view one image at a time.
If you want to display more images, you'll have to call the images from an HTML page using <img src="">

How do I do this? I know how to call the file but how can I have it display more than one image?

Write one script that prints the <img src=""> to the browser,
and write another script that you can call with a parameter to print the image.

Like this:

<?
for ($t=0;$t<10;$t++)
{
print "<img src=2.php?number=$t>";
};
?>

and 2.php:

<?
readfile("/any/dir/you/need/".$HTTP_GET_VARS["number"].".gif");
?>

I could do that, BUT... I have to be able to call the php3 file from an HTML page. Any ideas?

Calling PHP from an html file requires changing a few things about your webserver setup.

Search the forum, there have been a few people who did this succesfully.

I don't have access to any of the servers files. I can call the PHP script by the <IMG src="script.php3"> but it still displays one image. Any ideas or am I stuck?

Poor soul....

Look at my example.
I am not calling the script that prints all the images at once,

I create a new html page that has one <img src=""> line FOR EACH IMAGE.

The script that I call in those <img src=""> tags just displays ONE image.
I use the HTTP_GET_VARS to find out which image should be displayed.

You don't need access to the server config files, just the .htaccess that is in the same directory as your php scripts, so it should be accessible.
