this have to do with your apache configuration.
However, you shall be able to access a file (if not a directory).
Have a try accessing a something like http://your.site/index.html
To desactivate this feature, i guess adding an Indexes in the option directive of your httpd.conf server config shall do the trick, but am not sure. Have a test, and a look in the apache documentation.
