prevent linking directly to graphics

is there anyway to prevent people linking directly to my images. they are all jpg or gif. they are in a seperate directpory and are only used when called by a php view image file.

Instead of link to the image, link to a php script.

And make the show_picture.php something like:

The problem is that with that method you only loose the filename and filetype. not the image itself.

right click, download, rename to .jpg, .gif, etc...

The are articles on apache.org regarding setting apache to alow linking of images only from a perticualr domain, this does not preven saveing images on the clients computer, only from them useing you image link.

I have heard of javascript like this, but with javascript turned off its useless.

The problem is that the image got to the client right? if they can see it then it go to the clients computer. Even if you could remotley turn off the clients cache and turn on javascript, the image still got there right? then a simple sniffer on the clients computer could grab it. Ive used it myself to grab files of many sifferent types this way.

yup !
it's a hard choice : to show with "DON't tuch !" written under the pic ...

control the cache : yes , you can but not under all browser
enable javascript : yes , but not under all browser too

so ? no solution ?

maybe you know JAVA ?
yes ! php exists but JAVA too !
build an applet that load the pic somewhere ...
than show it with the applet !
right click and other stuff go away

sure than you can control the "cache" problem

the apache solution you listed sounds like exaclty what i am looking for. i want people to be able to save the images, but not link to our images from their site or wherever. save bandwidth.

Hello,

I you want to prevent that someone save an image of yr html page you must disable the right button of the mouse with the following javascript file (between the head tags) :

there is nothing more bloody annoying that having your right mouse button blocked.

firstly it removes a lot of useful functionality from the user; there's more to the right mouse button that 'view source' and 'save image'

secondly, it's trivially easy for anyone with even half a migrogram of sense to get around!

Options-> disable javascript and I have your images.

The best you can do is write a script to show the images only if the script is called by a page on your own site, using HTTP_REFERER

Also remember $HTTP_REFERER is SET by the browser, not the server, some browsers don't set it. Also the if the link is througha Header("Location: http://..."); it wont work, either through a posted form it wont.

There really is no 'sure' way. all you can do is make it tuff.

Even with a java app that loads windows. unless your going to set up some sort of encryption method with a tocken key or something, they can still sniff there own line to get the image.

Funny you should mention watermarking - that's what I'm trying to find - is there a PHP way to modify a GIF/JPG and add a digital watermark? I don't need anything too high-security or fancy, just something that marks the image as having come from my site.
