Reducing Threads

When I execute the command:
mysqladmin processlist

I find that my database is sometimes running with a large number of open connections. My ISP has contacted me and asked that I try to keep it below 10 connections but I'm not sure if this is possible or how I can go about consolidating things.

I am self-taught in PHP and MySQL programming but would very much appreciate any help you can give me in how to consolidate my connections. Is it possible to push everything through just a few connections?

Please help me if you can since I am totally stumped on this one at the moment.

when you open the connection in a script, and if you close it by using mysql_close(), then i guess there shouldnt be any more connections left open. and also if your script encounters exit(), it will drop all the connections automatically..

or may be i did not understand your question ..

Are you using persistant db connections?

but ... p_connect() also dissconects when it encounters exit()

but it will not get dissconect if it finds mysql_close()

Manual:

Second, the connection to the SQL server will not be closed when the execution of the script ends. Instead, the link will remain open for future use (mysql_close()
will not close links established by mysql_pconnect()).
