new mail waiting icon

I have web form and I use php script to process the form, once a user hit the submit button this insert the information submitted into a mysql database and at the same time send me an e-mail to let me know that a user has submitted information.
what I need is a thing like an icon to appear on my disktop each time I get a new mail to know that I have got new mail.
please can anyone help me with the code for that?

What platform are you on and what's your mail client?

The platform is: Digital UNIX V4.0E but I am not sure about the mail client I think it is Pegasus or Netscape mail

Woa, dude, I know NOTHING about digital UNIX V4.0E, so I can't submit any ideas about how to use PHP to communicate with your desktop, but I was GOING to just suggest that you keep your mail client open and set it to beep when you have mail. Don't know whether Netscape mail can do this either.

Souldn't your console tell you when you have mail like it does on other UN*X systems?

The mail client is irrelevant, only the mail server is important.

Anyway, aren't there any ready-made apps that do mail-checking?
I have seen them for linux and solaris and windows...

Or you could write a cron-job to check your mail (using php or perl or whatever)
