html to formated text function?

Does anyone know where I could find a function that would convert html tags in a string to a formated plain text string? Mainly, I need to be able to convert lists (<LI>) to properly indented text.

the ease of this depends on how the html itself is formatted.

are all the <li> tags properly closed?
do you need to deal with nested tables?
are the tags all nicely laid out line by line?

a good place to start would be converting <li> to \n\t and similar..
