Updating URL

On our intranet, we have a homepage that brings all other documents into itself and populates a specific frame on the page. The problem is that you never leave home.html and the home page has an onload statement to load a little welcome blurb when you access it. Every time you refresh or hit "back", you are taken away from the page you are viewing and returned to our welcome blurb. Does any script exist that can update a url onloading or perhaps there is script that is only run the first time a page is loaded? I am new to all of this so any advice would be appreciated.

you'd probably need to set a cookie so the message is only displayed to first timers....then you just do a simple if/else statement

don't show message
}
