speedy 16chars replace

I have a wodge of text in a variable.

I have to display it on a screen that is 16chars wide and has no intelligent text break (it splits words halfway through)

To get better formatting, I thus have to replace the space preceding every 17th char with a <br>, throughout the file.

It isn't that it is terribly hard, but I am trying to think of the way to do this that is FASTEST and puts least strain on the server... (well - and is most aesthetically pleasing... )

Any thoughts?
