Real-time server updating?

I am thinking about making an online game and was wondering if it was possible for a database to be updated automaticaly every hour.

I think that its something to do with keeping a page on the server open which refreshed every hour and updates the database when it refreshes, but even if I am right, I have no idea how to do this.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Yes. It is possible to do what you would like to do.

However, it will take work to figure out how to do it, and the best/only way to figure stuff out is to do it yourself. If you have an extra computer lying around, you can install Linux, which has tons of free development tools to use, including webservers/databases.

Everybody likes redhat, etc..., but I find that Debian is really easy to use and maintain. You can read more at www.linux.com, www.linux.org, www.redhat.com, www.debian.org

You can also use/find databases and programming tools for windows. I know that Apache/PHP will run on windows. The database of choice is usually MySQL, with information at http://www.mysql.com/
