Creating a newsletter -- check mail?

I am currently writing some newsletter software. I have the subscribe/unsubscribe with replying via clicking a link in a verfification e-mail setup.

I have been looking at popular existing software, and I notice that they remove bounced mail addresses from the mailing list?

How do they do it? Is the best way to do this to have a pop3 account setup to redirect the bounced mail to, and then have a script go and open that mailbox, parse the e-mails, and deal with the bounced addresses?

Or is there a better way? Anyone who has any experience/insight to this, I would really appreciate it if you could put me on the right track or point me to a good tutorial..

With popular mail servers that I have used, you can create 'Agent' mailboxes. These have a program (or command line) associated with them so that when an email arrives you can write a script to handle that message. This would answer your problems.

If you can't do that (maybe the server isn't yours) then you could write a script to periodically check the mail box and parse the emails, as you suggested.

I'm not sure that this is really tutorial material. Maybe a little too specific.
