this is an idiot question, i know, but i can't find the place in the manpage that specifies the exact behaviour of the "or" keyword (as in "or die()"), and of course if i try searching for "or" it's ignored as a noise word.

"or" in "or die" is part of "or die", not a seperate word.
"or" as a statement is descibed in the "logical operators" in the php manual.
damn. oh well, so much for trying to be clever. hmmm. that's not actually mentioned on the die() manpage, (nor, for that matter, what exactly it does)
Actually, working out some tests, OR is a valid operator to get things done, much like IF.
$r=FALSE; $a=$r or print ("this is printed if r==FALSE"); print $r;
