OK, here it is....

I have a whole lot of text with links I would like to insert in the one field (using mysql), is it possible for the links to be inserted in to this field?. I have tried the likes of:
<?php print <a href="www.phpbuilder.com">the best php help ever</a> ?>

Can you please tell me where I am going wrong....

You can insert anything into a mysql field.
If you are going to insert text that contains special characters, like quotes,
you will have to use the addslashes() when you insert the data,
and stripslashes() when you extract the data.
