Advise with Username/Password Authentication..

Hello everyone, I am building my own news posting script for a test site of my own, and I have developed everything except for the part of authenticating if a user is in the MySQL database, in order to allow him to access the posting page, where he/she has access to post, edit, and delete news items.

I really need help, as the tutorials I've found, are far too complicated and undocumented, and I can't follow them.

I also would appreciate if someone could explain just how exactly I could post values from a from into a variable, because I've tried using text inputs and with their respective names, but they do not work at all! Please, I know it sounds simple, but I don't get it.. I've been using the method=post, and action $PHP_SELF

Hi,

OK I can answer how to post a value from a HTML form into the PHP file.

Let's say you have a HTML webpage that looks like this:

<form action="action.php" method="POST">
Your name: <input type=text name=username>
<input type=submit></form>

This has a textfield called "username", and a "submit" button that will "post" to a file called "action.php"

Then you need to create the file "action.php", and write this text inside it:

Hello <?php echo $username?>.

So what happens, is the client will enter their name into the "username" textfield and click "submit". The browser then "posts" the value to a file called "action.php", where it reads the "username" value from the "$username" variable.
Since the datas' name was "username" in the HTML, this becomes "$username" in the PHP.

Maybe you are trying to access the variable inside the function so you aren't getting any values.

That's exactly reason the reason if you won't still get any received value in $username. Just follow Mr. James Haslam Reply to you. If that still isn't seem to work. Try to access the variable in the following ways:

function ShowUsername()
{
echo "<br>" . $GLOBALS["username"];
echo "<br>" . $HTTP_POST_VARS["username"];
echo "<br>" . echo $HTTP_GET_VARS["username"];
}

or if you prefer this one:

function ShowUsername()
{
global $username;
echo $username;
}

Note:

GLOBALS, HTTP_POST_VARS, HTTP_GET_VARS should be in all caps
