SMTP setting

For the e-mail fucntion, i used nail(...,...,...,...) to send email to the particular function.
But the time i run the program, i have unknown error at that line .
For the SMTP in php.ini, i dun know whether i need to change SMTP.

Or if i know the SMTP address, just assign it and the email can send already ???
