Form Validation Graphic next to blank field

I can't seem to find the best way to do this....
if a user leaves a required field blank, I'd like a graphic to appear next to the blank field.

Can anyone give me a clue how to go about this?

I've though about putting all the blank fields into an array and then copmaring the $key value to the fieldname value, but then i'd have to do that at every form field, and that seems excessive.

Yep, I use exactly this same technique to turn the field's associated
label red if its blank. In actual practice, I start out with an empty
array and then assign selected elements:

  $colr = array();
  ...
  if ($user_id == '')
    $colr[user_id] = 'color="#ff0000"';
  ...
  if (sizeof($colr) > 0) // at least one field missing
    get_data(..., $colr);
  else
    { / insert/update the record / }

In the form itself:

  echo "<td><font " . $colr[user_id]
    . "><input name=\"user_id\" type=...

The form is supposed to contain:

echo "<td><font " . $colr[user_id] . "> User ID</td>";
echo "<td><input name=\"user_id\" ...
