Creating thumbnails..

I wrote a page to display some digital camera pictures at 1/4 scale. I am using the functions ImageCreateFromPng and ImageCopyResized to accomplish this. My problem is the newly generated image is only 8 bit. Is there a way I can do this and get atleast 16bit?
