Using variables as table names

After a user logs in I want to create a temporary table named after the user. MySQL doesn't seem to like the following:

CREATE TEMPORARY TABLE '$username' (accountid INTEGER NON NULL AUTO_INCREMENT PRIMARY KEY, date etc etc

Is there a way round this or am I completely missing the point?

CREATE TEMPORARY TABLE '$username'

I assume you actually meant to say:

  "CREATE TEMPORARY TABLE '$username' ...

i.e. the whole thing is inside double-quotes so that the variable is
expanded. If that's so, then I'd recommend looking at the contents
of what you allow a username to be, and see if that conflicts with
MySql's rules for naming table (no, I can't give a worthwhile rendition
here from memory...)

Apolgies for timewasting. I thought I had tried it, but I've now found out it works without the ''.
