Separating XML elements

A new site I am working on is being supplied with a news feed as XML. The feed is being FTP'd onto the server daily and each feed has a different filename.

So far not too much trouble, but each file contains 10 stories with a separate xml tag for id, title, body elements etc. I need to be able to parse the file with PHP and output the data into MySql, separating each individual story along the way.

Can anyone suggest a way to do this as I'm stumped?

Just use the xml fucntions from expat in php or use the xmldom in php. Both will accomplish your task easily. There are a couple stories on this site that walk you through parsing an xml doc. with php.

I am a total newcomer to xml and I have just about grasped parsing the contents of a document for use by PHP, it is just separating elements in the same document that is causing me bother.

The xml files I am working with contain stories similar to this:

<STORY>
<STORYID>25</STORYID>
<TITLE>a story</TITLE>
<DESCRIPTION>this is a story</DESCRIPTION>
<PARAGRAPH>first paragraph</PARAGRAPH>
</STORY>

I have 10 of these stories in each document and I just need to know the feasability of separating them and storing each as a separate MySql record.

I apologise if this has been covered before but I have searched and have not found anyone with a problem quite like this. Thanks for any help.

I have finally worked out a way to do this if anyone else has a similar problem. I used Joe Stump's XML tutorial from this site and modified the returnPage function to execute a MySql query instead of echoing the results.

I then used the readdir() function to parse every file in the directory and hey presto an archived news feed!
