Its quite possible im just being a moron and missing this, however :

I am trying to get the pixel size of the browser that calls up a page. I then wish to
use that value to correctly place a pop-up menu on the right side of the browser. (via layers)

In Javascript this would be done with
document.body.clientWidth ..

is there an equilivant function/call in php ?
since (im assuming) I cant call a javascript function within php .. since its parsed on the server.

i'm going to continue hunting .. but if anyone could help - or barring that .. point me to a url that documents this .. i would GREATLY appreciate it ..

The basic issue here is that PHP is a server-side language, and it knows only what the browser explicitly tells it. Ordinarily, HTTP requests do not include information about the browser other than the user-agent string (which is pretty minimal).

One thing that you could consider is embedding into the document a bit of Javascript that would get the info you need from the browser and embed it in a cookie. Since cookies are transmitted with each HTTP request, the information would be transmitted as well. PHP then can obtain the cookied data and tailor the page accordingly.

The obvious problem is that your initial contact with the customer won't include this information.

I'm sure you can think of a Javascript refresh trick -- if no cookie, set cookie, refresh page -- that would solve this problem at the expense of a little page bounce for each new user.

hmm .. doing it with a cookie had come to mind .. of course .. thats assuming they allow cookies 😛

i suppose too .. that i could put the
layer definition into a JSfuntion .. and just parse the variable in .. hmm .. i don't know how that would work - heh.

i suppose i could wimp out and just put it on the left side of the window .. but .. but .. it would look a lot better on the right 😛

I haven't seen your code, but can't you just put <script>
document.write(document.body.clientWidth); </script>

... where you need to refer to the width? Why does PHP need to know this information?

I don't quite remember the process in grabbing a value from a javascript, but what you could do is have a redirect page that reads the browser sizes, then redirects to your main page like this:
main.php?width=800&height=600

That could all be done via the first pages javascript, and you could then pull those variables using php. I'll help ya out if you have anymore trouble.
