How to crop a string...

I have stumbled upon a problem:

How can I crop a string that is longer than a desired number of characters?

For example: if content is greater than 200 then crop content until the 200th character and add at the end ...[more] link to the full article..

If you have any way of fixing this or a solution I would really appreciate it!
