addslashes ()

hello,
i need to add '' front and back of a specfic word

$a='senthil';
so i do like
$a=addslashes ($a);
i dont see any change .

how should i do it?
1.i have my magic quote off
2. is there any escape for " ' etc

You can try this:

$a = "test_string";
$a = "'$a'";
echo $a;

escape char for ' & " is \
