How to load pspell dictionaries?

My calls to pspell_new("en") keep barfing. Here's the warning I get:

Warning: PSPELL couldn't open the dictionary. reason: I'm sorry I can't find any sutable word lists for the language-tag "en".

I'm not sure where to put the dictionary, or even how to get it. I can't find this aspect of pspell's operation anywhere. Anyone know how to fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. If anyone has this working for them, I'd be greatly interested in talking to you.

note that you have to have aspell and the aspell-dictionary or aspell-en loaded - that will create the .pwli files you're not finding.

i cannot use aspell. Does this mean that pspell is obsolete to me?
