Replacing \ with \\

I am trying to excape a few characters for security reason. One such character is the . I want to change \ to \ in a variable. I thought I could just use:

ereg_replace("\","\\",$sbody);

But when I try it I receive a warning about a training slash. Ok, so what am I doing wrong? I am using 3.0.12.

There's multiple levels of backslash-interpretation going
on here. Since you don't appear to need \n in your
strings, try single quotes instead of double: these don't
interpret backslashes so you need fewer of them.

When I try:

ereg_replace('\','\',$sbody);

I receive the following:

Warning: Unexpected character in input: '\' (ASCII=92) state=1

Oops, my message was a bit misleading. Using single
instead of double quotes means you need few backslashes
<i>to accomplish the same result</i>. But it read like
you could eliminate some from your code. In fact, you
probably need to say

ereg_replace('\', '\\', $string);

to replace a single backslash with a double one, since
regex's also interpret backslashes.

You're not gonna like this, but what I got to work was:

$processed = ereg_replace( '\\' , '\\' , $raw );

In other words, the FROM argument is undergoing one more level
of backslash-interpretation that the TO argument is. The manual
is (of course) silent on this subject. I even added a paren-match
to the pattern and a \1 to the replacement, to see if that affected
things, but it didn't seem to.

I was trying to do something like that except the other way around,.. i dont know if this is better perhaps?

stripslashes($sbody);
