Is there a good way to detect (aside from Java/VBscript) when a browser is no longer active, and then destroy the session? perhaps a delayed session_destroy() of some sort? I have an option, within my app, to "log out" which destroys the session and closes the window. What I need, however, is a way to deal with people who don't see the point of logging out when there's that neat little clicky X up in the corner.

The default life of sessions is until they close their browser, or you call session_destroy();, so no real point worry about it.

I'm in a dilemma then. I've got old sessions sitting in my temporary directory. I know what data they contain, and I know when they were created. When the browser closes, these sessions remain on the server. any ideas?

Don't worry about it. They will go away.

A little more detail ...

After a period of time defined in your php.ini file, the untouched session becomes eligible for deletion.

A garbage collection routine is invoked according to a probability value (also defined in php.ini).

The more traffic you have, the more likely the gc routine will be invoked.

If you have very little traffic, the old sessions may sit around for awhile. But sooner or later, the garbage collection will come around, and they will be erased.
