time and error checking

hi,
1.) does anyone know how to check that the user has enter 7 digit number follow by a character??
i use:
(ereg('^{[0-9]{1,7}$',} $cert)
to check that the first 7 digit of $cert is number,but how can i check that the 8th word is an alpbert.i try to use
(ereg('^{[A-Z]{7,9}$',} $cert)
but this doesn't seem to be working ...
can anyone pls help!!!

2.) i want the user to select the time from 0700 to 1800 from the combo box with a 30 minutes interval.which mean the time display in the combo box is like 0700,0730,0800,0830...
i try to look into the date and time of the php manual,but can't get anything out of it...
can anyone pls pls help...
