Authentication/ login help

Hi all

I am total php newbie & need some help on a site i am working on. What i want to do is be able to verify when a person tries to access a secure page on my site, if they have access to the page or if they have logged in. If they are not in the database, then they are told they dont have access, but if verified that their details exists, then they can continue.. I know its something to do with sessions/cookies, but ijust cannot get the hang of it. Can anyone give me some pointers. I am only looking to protect about 4 pages.

Well you can use sessions and/or cookies or if your using Apache then you can use HTTP Authorization which I find to be a bit easier to set up and way easier to maintain.

It's all really a matter of what your using and which way you want to go.

There are a couple of really good articles sitting in the columns section on this site, I would highly suggest reading them as they can better describe the basics than I. If you still have questions after that then I'll be happy to assist.
