Hi i'm trying to do a sum i have a table that runs out a list of info with various parts to it and i want to multiply column 3 & 4 to get column 5 and then add column 6 & 5 to get 7. I just wondered if any one knows how to do that. The other thing is that i want it to get some of the info from a table where it's = to a jobno and a taskno but it won't know what the task no is till it's run the table and populated it's self. I hope this makes sense to someone, Thanks

Use AS

SELECT homemadecol5 AS (col3+col4) FROM table;

But the 5+6 = 7 thing, I'm not sure.
Try:
SELECT homemadecol5 AS (col3+col4), col7 AS (homemadecol5+col6) FROM table;

This can be done in PHP as well, but I guess you want the best performance .

You'll have to explain the second question a bit more if I am to understand.

Col3+col4 what i really need to do is to multiply those two. Sorry i didn't explain myself properly, the second question was my trying to explain that i have a statement, select aircraft from defects where jobno = $jobno and taskno = $taskno; the table looks like this

taskno aircraft totaldefects totalcost

1 GHHJK 3 20
2 GHHJK 5 78

the totaldefects is a sum but it needs to select the taskno and the taskno isn't available till it runs the task query not sure if this makes any sense. the total defects has to match the taskno but there maybe a different no of tasks for a different aircraft. select (col3*col4) as homemadecol...

Is jobno a column in another table that you haven't shown?

i've put jobno in all my tables it's one of the columns that should link it all together
