how to implement a cookie

Could anyone share the syntax of how to implement a cookie to be returned to the visitor by the php script and later, when the visitor returns, detect which it is via another script. Can I imbed in the cookie who the visitor is, or at least which category they are classified as?

You can put any name=value pair into a cookie and it will show up later as $name. I have a little cookie demo with code here:
